The work of advancement is to serve as a link between you and Lyon. We are here to help alumni, parents, and friends of the college who want to know more about Lyon, wish to volunteer to help 'advance' the cause of Lyon, and who pledge to give or obtain financial support that will translate into more scholarships, better academic facilities and an endowment that will perpetuate for generations to come the quality of education being received by students here.
At Lyon, we believe that athletics plays an important role in building character and integrity, as well as promoting leadership, teamwork, and responsibility. Lyon proudly competes athletically in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division I as part of the American Midwest Conference as the Scots (Men).
In our commitment to supporting the College's mission of offering a liberal arts education of superior quality in a personalized setting, we aspire to be innovative in analyzing, interpreting, and presenting information to inspire creative business solutions, and creating an environment where people are challenged, developed, and proud to work here.
Campus safety officers provide a measure of security to Lyon. Official duties include securing campus property after business hours, responding to complaints from faculty, staff, and students, enforcing campus policies, and maintaining the general order of campus. Officers also serve as a liaison to local police and emergency service authorities.
Many students think that a Lyon education is financially out of reach. However, it is the pleasure of the financial aid staff to award over $4 million in institutional aid to our students to allow them to attend what US News and World Report consistently lauds as "One of America's Best Liberal Arts Colleges."
Members of the Lyon faculty are devoted teacher-scholars. They provide students not only with a thorough understanding of the theory and practice of a specific discipline, but also of the interconnections between that discipline and other fields of study the College offers. The result is an educational experience of exceptional breadth (interdisciplinary) and depth (major field of study).
In support of the mission of Lyon, the Mabee-Simpson Library provides superior quality resources and services that foster learning, working, and professional development. While many of these resources are accessible through the campus network, many are also available in a comfortable physical facility that encourages freedom of inquiry, social exchanges, and the pursuit of personal growth. Library services will enrich the intellectual and cultural environment of the College, while promoting and supporting lifelong learning among students, faculty, and staff.
The president's office includes the president, administrative coordinator to the president, and the administrative assistant to the president. The purpose of the president's office is to support the president in the execution of his/her duties and responsibilities as CEO. It provides staff support to the executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, communicates regularly with the chair of the board, maintains a regular communication flow with board members, provides staff support to cabinet meetings, and maintains a selective program of institutional research.
The student life staff assist students in their efforts to achieve the following intended learning outcomes--communication skills, intellectual openness, personal self-discovery, leadership, civic engagement, and life-long learning skills. Members of the student life staff facilitate the process in which students weave choices into the fabric of their lives as they develop their potential in learning what it means to be a person of honor and integrity.
Lyon is more than just a college. It's a community distinguished by its academic curriculum, unique honor and social systems, and award-winning professors.
