Lyon launches new mobile app

The usage of smartphones is growing exponentially and research shows that the traditional age group (18-24) are using their smartphones multiple hours a day. Students become aware of events and activities going on around campus through emails, social media sites (e.g.-Facebook), and posters. If there is additional important information to share with students regarding academics, this is handled through emails and text messages. Students receive upwards of 100 emails a day. On average, only 10% of emails sent are opened by students.

Spots available in Lyon’s Celtic Arts Summer School

Registration is open and there are still spots available for students to attend Lyon College’s Celtic Arts Summer School set for June 14-19 on campus.

Lyon has hosted the summer school for the last 10 years for middle school and high school students interested in piping and drumming, according to James Bell, Lyon Pipe Band Major and director of the Scottish Heritage Program.

Lyon College receives $500,000 challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation

Lyon College is pleased to announce it was awarded a $500,000 challenge grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation. The grant will go toward funding one of the new residence halls that will open this fall.

As part of the challenge grant, Lyon raised $5,172,000 between April 2014 May 2015. The Mabee Foundation has supported other projects at Lyon in the past. In 2001, the Foundation awarded Lyon $500,000 to support the construction of the Derby Center for Science and Mathematics. In total, the college has received just under $4.4 million from the Foundation since 1973.

Judge Bill Walmsley presents Court of Appeals Opinions to Lyon

In a ceremony at the Batesville Chamber of Commerce May 20, former Arkansas Court of Appeals Judge Bill Walmsley '63 presented Dr. Scott Roulier, the John D. Trimble Professor of Political Philosophy at Lyon, with a copy of his court opinions that he wrote during his service on the Court of Appeals.

Lyon receives grant from the Winthrop Rockefelller Foundation

A grant from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation will help young men attending Lyon College become leaders in Arkansas.

Lyon’s Marksmen Club receives NRA grant

The Marksmen Club and Lyon College wish to thank the NRA Foundation for its generous support through a grant to continue the club's growth and development.

The recently-awarded grant purchased 40 cases of ammunition for the team, a total of 10,000 shells.

“We are very grateful to the NRA. Without this support, our shooters could not have put in the practice needed to excel in competition,” said Landon Downing, coordinator for Lyon’s trap team.

Naming of new residence halls highlight of Lyon Board of Trustees meeting

The Lyon College Board of Trustees met for its spring meeting April 24 on the Lyon College campus.

Lyon confers 121 degrees, recognizes Cole for support

Lyon College conferred 121 degrees to the 2015 graduating class at the 143rd commencement ceremony May 9 in Becknell Gymnasium.

During the ceremony, Lyon President Dr. Donald Weatherman presented Dale Cole with the Friend of Education Award for his generous support of the college.

2015 Biggest Winners

Congratulations to Andrew Hunter and Kat Seals, the winners of the 2015 Biggest Winners competition. Each semester, students, faculty, and staff can compete. Participants that lose the greatest percentage of their body weight over the semester are declared the winners. Students win $1,000 toward their next semester's tuition, and the prize for faculty/staff is $500. Andrew won the student competition, losing 18.5% of his body weight, and Kat won the faculty/staff competition, losing 13% of her body weight.

James Schlimmer takes post as new Vice President for Enrollment Services

When James Schlimmer described his ideal career position, he said it would be a role in admissions or enrollment at a church-affiliated small college. He found the perfect fit at Lyon College and has joined the administration as the new Vice President for Enrollment Services.
