Lyon students present at Summer Experience Fair

On Tuesday, January 17, Lyon College students, faculty, staff and alumni gathered on campus for the first annual Summer Experience Fair (SEF), an interactive event that encouraged students to engage in experiential learning during their summer break.

During the fair, 17 students presented their summer jobs, internships, academic travel, research positions, service and other opportunities.

“At Lyon, we understand that students will need both a college degree and experience to compete for opportunities after graduation,” said Director of Career Services Annette Castleberry. “Many times the best teachers are our peers. That’s why we provide this forum for upperclassmen to share their summer experiences with other students.”

Student presenters gained familiarity articulating their experiences just as they would in future job interviews. Student attendees learned valuable insights in finding relevant experience to help make them marketable to prospective employers, such as funding sources and finding opportunities. They also learned whether or not the presenters’ experiences influenced their academic and career goals.

Lyon alumni Brent Williams, ’98, Bethany Wallace, ’01, Jake Severs, ’08, and Frances Winfrey, ’12, served as judges for the event. For each student presentation, they evaluated verbal presentation, visual aid and professionalism.

The panel of judges selected business major Leilani Ocasio, '18, as the SEF winner. Ocasio’s presentation on her internship at Sam’s Club earned her top marks and the College’s $1,000 scholarship prize.

When asked whether or not he enjoyed attending the SEF, junior anthropology major Cody Richardson responded with gratitude and enthusiasm.

“I’m definitely glad I did it," he said. "It was a great opportunity for us to strengthen our communications skills, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”

Richardson shared his internship at Historic Mesquite Inc., where he engaged in a variety of museum tasks, from tours and education to digs and preservation.
