Lyon College inducted a dozen new Scots to the community during the College’s 2023 Spring Matriculation Ceremony. The ceremony took place Monday, January 9, in Sloan Auditorium, Brown Fine Arts Building.
Senior Alyssa Buentello, president of the Student Government Association, welcomed the group to campus with a sneak-peek of what they can expect from Lyon College.
“Today is the beginning of one of the most exciting phases of your life,” said Buentello. “The lessons you learn here and the memories you will create at Lyon College will stay with you for the rest of your life.”
She continued, “By signing your names onto the Roll of Honor today, you are vowing to maintain honor and integrity during your time here at Lyon. Scots throughout the years have signed their names committing to the same vow, honor and tradition that you now take part in.”
Lyon College President Dr. Melissa P. Taverner continued with traditions, speaking of the 150 years of time-honored values that Lyon College cultivates.
“Lyon College like any institution, particularly one that is 150 years old, has foundational principles and the concomitant expectations that have developed over the years and are grounded in our values,” said Taverner.
Taverner explained further the integral values of Lyon College’s community.
“These include but are not limited to honesty, with ourselves and others; integrity, holding fast to guiding principles even when it’s hard; and a commitment to the pursuit of truth through rigorous inquiry,” she said.
Taverner continued, “One of the most important pillars of the Lyon Community, living and acting at all times with honor, encompasses all three of these defining values.”
Honor Council president Colin Gopaul explained in further detail what the Roll of Honor fully entailed before inviting students to take their vow and sign their name.
Students then participated in the tradition of “Passing the Flame,” which symbolizes the College’s foundation of providing service to others while focusing on personal integrity.
The ceremony ended with Kristian Ameigh leading the Alma Mater on the piano, and Dr. Terrell Tebbetts welcoming the group to the community one last time.
