On Friday, Oct. 19, Lyon College’s Career Center hosted a healthcare immersion trip to White River Medical Center (WRMC) for Lyon students. Thirty-two students listened to several medical professionals share about their fields and met representatives from graduate and professional programs, including University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
According to Lyon’s Director of Career Services Annette Castleberry, students were afforded a remarkable opportunity: one to “immerse” themselves in a local healthcare facility and learn from local professionals. The college’s emphasis on community is evident in trips such as these: Lyon students gained real-world experience right here in Batesville.
Castleberry said, “At Lyon we want our students to have real insight into career paths and employers, and the immersion trip program provides just that. Today our students networked with 16 healthcare professionals—administrators, physicians, nurses, medical lab scientists, and pharmacists—as well as five graduate and professional school programs. A lot goes into a student’s decision to pursue professional school, and Lyon is committed to providing opportunities that help students make the right call for them.”
Castleberry and Lyon’s Career Center are instrumental in continually connecting Lyon students and the greater Batesville community in positive and effective ways.
Besides meeting healthcare professionals, Lyon students also learned about networking and attended discussion panels covering administration, pharmacy, nursing, and more.
“Healthcare is an exciting field to engage in,” said senior Ridge Hester. “Because of the healthcare immersion trip, Lyon College students were able to learn from various hospital leaders through panel discussions and a networking lunch. The event definitely turned out to be a success!”
Lyon is more than just a college. It's a community distinguished by its academic curriculum, unique honor and social systems, and award-winning professors.
