Indonesian government awards grant to Lyon professor

The government of Indonesia recently awarded Martha Beck, professor of philosophy, a grant to teach at the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in Jakarta, Indonesia, during the spring of 2017.

Beck received a Fulbright Fellowship to teach in Bandung, Indonesia, in 2012, where she delivered lectures at five Islamic universities. She intends to deliver lectures to all five institutions again.

Indonesia is the fourth largest nation in the world. Of the 240 million who reside there, 200 million commit themselves to uniting Islam with democracy, religious toleration and Western secular legal and political institutions.

Indonesian universities produce more doctorates promoting modern Islam than any other nation. Beck plans to link these scholars with scholars in the United States so that they can increase their professional contacts throughout the world and publish more articles in internationally juried journals.

For more information on Indonesia or connecting with professionals, please contact Beck at martha.beck@lyon.edu.
