Emergency funds raised to help students

The Lyon College Student Emergency Fund has raised $13,000 to help approximately 40 students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The funds raised were a combined effort between Lyon College’s Student Government Association and donors.

Last week, Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students Dr. Patrick Mulick thanked donors via video. 

“This fund was important because we had so many students displaced and so many students and family in such huge need as a result of COVID-19,” he said.

The College announced the launch of the fund in mid-March after taking the unprecedented step of dismissing students from campus and transitioning to remote instruction.

“Within hours of President Joey King’s announcement, we heard from many alumni and friends who just wanted to say ‘let me know what I can do,’” said Vice President for Advancement Dr. David Hutchison.

Mulick said the funds will help recipients with living expenses such as rent, utilities, and food. 

“I always tell people Lyon is an amazing community that reaches out and supports each other through all times… And through your actions of donating to this fund, it is an explicit example of how the alumni, friends, and families of Lyon College truly do want to support this community.”
