Autist-Fic with Louis Bollinger

Student Bio:

My name is Louis Bollinger. I am from Austin, Texas. I am currently studying English as well as Religion and Philosophy at Lyon College. I am involved in our school’s theatre program; I played Feste in our fall production of Twelfth Night this past semester, and I played Orpheus in Eurydice last spring. I also participate in our school’s radio program. Every Sunday night at 10PM, I am live on KILT to do my show called “Nightcore Nightmare.” After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in editorial work or transcription. I am also interested in writing screenplays.

Podcast Synopsis:

My podcast is about autistic representation in fiction. As an autistic individual who loves literary analysis, I have dedicated much of my time at Lyon to vigorously pointing at socially quirky characters found in our assigned readings and exclaiming, “Me! That’s just like me for real!” I believe the way in which we interact with fiction reflects our perceptions of the real world. I think it is important to identify disabilities in fiction in order to better understand and respect those who have them in our daily lives.

Health Coaching with Cassidy

Student Bio:

My name is Cassidy Garrett, and I am from Batesville, Arkansas. I am a senior biology major with minors in chemistry and psychology and a pre-medical concentration. I have played volleyball for the last four years here at Lyon and was elected a captain during my Junior and Senior years. I have also been an active member of the Presbyterian Student Association (PSA), Mortar Board, the Honors Fellows Program, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Organization (SAAO). I have also served the last three years as an Honors Fellows mentor for an incoming freshman, as well as a Year One Mentor for an entire class of freshmen. While I am still trying to decide on a career path, I am currently considering applying to medical school after graduation. I would love to pursue a career as either an emergency medicine physician, obstetrician (OB), or as a neurologist. In the meantime, I plan to continue working as a patient care technician at White River Medical Center and gain further patient experience.

Podcast Synopsis:

The goal for my podcast was to create a combination of public scholarship while also incorporating a capstone element from the last four years here at Lyon. I focused on health coaching as a form of public scholarship since I believe the public could learn and perhaps be inspired themselves to volunteer at their local healthcare centers. I wanted to describe the clinical aspects of diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus in order to encourage chronic disease prevention among the audience members as well as any future patients they may choose to work with. I chose this topic because it was one of the most impactful experiences I have had during my time at Lyon. Working with a real patient has immensely shaped my career plans by strengthening my confidence in choosing a career in healthcare.

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome with Jonah Glover

Student Bio:

Hello, my name is Jonah Glover and I am a senior at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas. I am a Biology and Spanish double major from Fayetteville, Arkansas, with a Pre-Physical Therapy concentration. I am a member of the honors fellows program as well as the men’s soccer team. After graduation I plan on attending physical therapy school and becoming a physical therapist.

Podcast Synopsis:

The central idea of my podcast is MTSS or medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints).  My podcast highlights what MTSS is, how you get the injury, and how to cure it.  The goal for my podcast was to intertwine something I am extremely interested in and public scholarship.  I noticed when doing my honors fellows contract for a prior class that MTSS had a lack of research and information in comparison to other injuries.  I wanted to shed light on a topic that many people know very little about.  I hope that athletes and nonathletes alike can benefit from this podcast if they ever get MTSS.

Breaking it Down with Elliot Kemp

Student Bio:

I am Elliot Kemp, a senior Biology major from Conway, Arkansas. After graduation I plan on going to graduate school to study marine biology with a focus on animal behavior. I hope to study sharks, but I also have an interest in entomology and behavioral ecology. I have an interest in science communication as well and hope to be able to share my research with whoever will listen.

Podcast Synopsis:

This desire to share knowledge was what spurred me to make this podcast. In the summer of 2021 I participated in the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates program at Dauphin Island Sea Lab. There, I researched diatoms, microscopic plankton with shells made of glass. In talking about my research I realized that a lot of people don’t know what diatoms are, despite how integral they are to our lives. In “Breaking it Down” I hope to present these topics in ways that are easily digestible to a non-scientist.

Honors Fellow Capstone Podcast with Jacob Lawrinenko

Student Bio:

My name is Jacob Lawrinenko and I am originally from La Porte City, Iowa. I’m a double major in Economics and Math. I wrestle here at Lyon, competing at the 141 and 133 pound weight classes. Additionally, I am a brother of the Kappa Sigma fraternity here on campus. My hopes after graduation are to work for a bit before going to graduate school for applied math!

Podcast Synopsis:

My podcast explores 3 major topics: math, the complexity of our world, and financial markets. I compare the movement of price to that of a particle and elaborate with some statistics using linear regression. We touch on examples of how crazy our world is and dive slightly into the emerging world of complexity sciences! Additionally, I attempt to discuss the innate method for making investment decisions in financial markets. My research I mention is from the spring and summer of 2022. In fact, it was an Honors Contract. Courses that have aided me in my research and this podcast include: Investments, Econometrics, Corporate Finance 1, and Differential Equations. I chose this topic because I couldn’t decide between economics or math, so I figured I’d try and mesh them together. I hope members of the audience will see that math is a less daunting discipline and, at that; is for everyone!

"Values: The Intersection of Art and Cultural Identity" with Nicholas McDonald

Student Bio:

Nicholas McDonald is a Political Science and Art double major at Lyon College. McDonald plans to attend a residency to further practice artistry development.

Podcast Synopsis:

The podcast seeks to communicate my goals of my artist practice which is to expand the narrative surrounding Black artwork in the Western art historical context. My research is informed heavily by critical literary and political theory and the framework of contemporary conceptual art practice. I chose this topic due to its personal importance in helping me form my current notion of identity. I hope that listeners might start a similar journey in engaging deeply with the images surrounding them and learning how those images have shaped their perspectives on the world and their place in it.

"The Making of Medications: The Ideas, The Makings, and The Testings" with Nikkolette Perkins

Student Bio:

My name is Nikkolette Perkins and I am from Brookland, AR. I am a senior that is a chemistry and math double major. At Lyon, I like to stay busy, as I am currently an RA on campus, the Math tutor, and the Honors Fellows President. I also serve as the Mortar Board Vice President and am an active member of Dr. Irosha’s research group. I also was highly honored this semester as being named Miss Lyon College by the students, faculty, and staff at Lyon. Outside of Lyon, I won the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, a prestigious research scholarship open to all students in the country. I am currently applying to graduate schools, where I can start my career goals. I hope to get a Ph. D. in organic chemistry, where I can eventually work in the drug discovery industry, where I can research new medications for a wide variety of diseases and illnesses.

Podcast Synopsis:

The podcast I created was called “The Making of Medication: The Ideas, The Methods, and the Testings.” The idea of this podcast was to discuss my research project based on attempting to create a new drug for lung cancer. I talked about all that goes into making medication, such as the research that goes into it, the variety of reactions and methods that go into it, and the multiple tests to see if the new possible medication. The information from this podcast was informed by the research I have been doing since I was a freshman at Lyon, and personal research I have done on lung cancer. I chose this topic because I think it is important for people to know how the medication is made, and also to hear how serious lung cancer is. In the podcast, I talk about the risks of lung cancer and the factors that play into lung cancer. I warn again these factors and advise people to avoid them. I hope people take away how the medication they take every day started off being made, and how to avoid lung cancer.

"Your Body and Brain on the Birth Control Pill" with Maddie Poole

Hello! My name is Maddie Poole, and I am from Batesville, AR. I am majoring in biology with a minor in psychology, and I have a pre-physical therapy concentration. At Lyon, I am involved in the Honors Fellows Program, Presbyterian Students Association, and Mortar Board. My future goals include attending physical therapy school and becoming a pediatric physical therapist.

Podcast Synopsis:

My podcast is an analysis of the hormonal birth control pill. The birth control pill has made an incredible impact on women’s lives, but there are some side effects that are not widely talked about or understood. I first learned about this in a class I took during my sophomore year. It was always in the back of my mind as something I wanted to explore further, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to do it. After listening to my podcast, I hope that you have a greater understanding of the birth control pill and how it affects both the body and the brain.

"Le's Talk Flow" with Spencer Rhoden

Student Bio:

My name is Spencer Rhoden and I am from Bryant, AR. I am currently a senior at Lyon college studying Computer Science and Art. While here at Lyon I have competed with the Archery Team, gone on many trips with LEAP, helped out with the Gardening Club, kept up my business, REV, and have most recently been helping to develop a school Discord server to help with communication around campus and better connect the Lyon community both inside and outside of Batesville!

Podcast Synopsis:

For my podcast I wanted to explore the ideas of flow and creativity, and what better way to do that than to have organic conversations around the topics! I recorded 3 conversations, one with my friend and mentor, Steve Rice, who had recently moved out to the mountains to be closer to his family and following his passion for painting. We had a great conversation about some of my recent experiences, his transition, the lessons he learned, how to allow more space and flow in your life by tapping into your core values, and my current outlook on my company! Another conversation I had was with Abigail Smithson, a professor of art here at Lyon, and we discussed her passion for Basketball and how that carried her through her thesis project and 2 art residencies! Lastly, and certainly not least, I had a great chat with Professor Bork! He teaches a course on creativity here, so who better to pick their brain about how to cultivate creativity and mindfulness which really go hand in hand! All in all I hope you get as much value out of this podcast as I have in making it. I believe everyone could benefit from a little more art, outdoors, and flow in their life :)

"Eradicating the Gap" with Destiny Sharp

Student Bio:

My name is Destiny Sharp and I am a Batesville, Arkansas native. I am currently a senior at Lyon College double majoring in business with emphases in finance, management, and accounting and economics. Here at Lyon, I currently serve and have served as a Resident Assistant (RA) and the External Vice-President of the Honors Fellows Program for the past two years. I am also honored to have been inducted into both the Alpha Lambda Delta and Mortar Board honor societies during my time at Lyon, as well as being named the distinguished title of Ms. Lyon this year. I have worked at a local State Farm office for roughly four years now and have just recently started the process of pursuing my insurance license in the state of Arkansas. I hope to be fully licensed and continue to work in insurance after I graduate from Lyon College this May.

Podcast Synopsis:

My podcast episode, Eradicating the Gap, is over the gender wage gap and focuses on what it is, whether it still exists or not, and provides potential ways to remedy it. As a woman in a male-dominated field of study, I quickly became fascinated in the gender wage gap and made it the focus of many of my research projects here at Lyon. I was, and still am, interested to see all of the different factors that contribute to the wage gap, as well as researching whether specific factors, such as COVID-19, have any impact on it at all. I chose to focus my podcast on this topic because I believe that more people need to be aware of the inconsistencies between the wages of men and women who are doing the same job. My hope for the future is that the gender wage gap continues to shrink as more and more people become educated on the topic and our society reaches a point where we will no longer support the factors that play into this form of injustice.
