Lyon College Academic Day
Saturday, March 4, 2023

On each annual Academic Day, students from 13 counties in the region are invited to participate in a math competition and STEMonstrations. Students may participate in the Regional ACTM Math Contest, sponsored by the Arkansas Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the winners will go on to compete in the state contest at the University of Central Arkansas. Students may also participate in the STEMonstrations, sponsored by Lyon College. Top-placing students will be considered for scholarships to Lyon College.
Check-in will be located at the Lyon College Derby Math and Science Center on East College Avenue starting at 8:15 a.m. The Math tests will begin promptly at 9:15 a.m. Campus tours and other activities will be offered during non-testing times. A full schedule will be announced soon!
Students must be accompanied by a designated class sponsor or parent.
Registration Extended to Wednesday, March 1.
Guidelines
General Testing
- Students must be accompanied by a designated class sponsor or parent.
- No. 2 pencils are required to complete the scantron answer sheets.
- Any student who disrupts a testing period will be warned. If the disruption continues, the student will be asked to turn in the exam, which will not be scored, and report to his or her sponsor.
- Students are required to stay in the testing room for the entire time even if they have finished.
- Cell phones must not be accessed at any time inside the testing room. Accessing a cell phone is considered a disruption.
- STEMonstrations are the property of Lyon College and may not be written on or removed from the room.
Math Testing
- To be eligible to participate in any competition, a student must be enrolled in the course or have completed the course during the current school year.
- Tests will be multiple choice format with the exception of tie-breaker questions.
- Use of calculators which do not contain a subset of a computer algebra system (CAS) will be permitted (The TI-82, TI-83, TI-83+, TI-85, and TI-86 are permitted; the TI-89 and TI-92 are NOT permitted.) Calculator sharing is not allowed.
- The length of each test will be one hour (including instructions).
- Students may keep their test so they may write on the test for calculations.
- A complete set of tests and answer keys will be provided to the sponsor at no charge.
- First, second, and third place winners will be invited to participate in the state contest.
- Students must attempt the tie-breakers to be considered for first, second, and third place.
- Students who do not attempt tie-breaker questions will be eliminated from consideration for first, second, and third place.
- Tie-breaker questions will be graded only in the event of ties for the top three positions. The tie-breaker questions will be graded sequentially until ties are broken. Every effort will be made to break ties.
- Scores will be mailed to the sponsor at no charge.

Pre-Registration
- Pre-registration must be completed by a school sponsor by March 1, 2023. Pre-registration is very important—it allows us to know the number of entrants in each area so that we can prepare the appropriate number of tests. We will only prepare enough tests for the number of students pre-registered, so we cannot accept additional students on the day of the exams. Substitutions will be allowed if a pre-registered student cannot attend.
- In the pre-registration form, a parent/guardian/legal representative of the student must acknowledge receipt of a media release and affirm if they will or will not sign the release. Media releases are available here. Signed media releases must be presented by or before registration. Releases may be emailed or faxed to Amanda Szulga. Media releases cannot be signed by minors. A media release is not required for a student to participate in Academic Day.
- Math tests and STEMonstrations have individual registration forms.
- The school sponsor must also submit a school registration form, which includes the total number of individual student registrations and payment due (the only cost is for printing test booklets). Download and print the registration form here.
- School sponsors can send a registration form for each student to:
