Course Objectives:
Students will acquire a basic knowledge of spoken Japanese so that they can effectively communicate in everyday situations. Particular attention will be given to studying greetings, classroom expressions and numbers, providing personal information, and engaging in daily activities. While emphasis is placed on speaking and listening, attention is also given to reading and writing. Students will learn the two sets of 46 Japanese characters (kana) and 29 kanji (Chinese characters). Students will also acquire general knowledge of the Japanese people and their culture.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will acquire a more basic knowledge of spoken Japanese so that they can effectively communicate in everyday situations. Particular attention will be given to expressing likes and dislikes, adjectives, making requests, asking for permission, present progressive form of verbs, and short forms of verbs. While emphasis is placed on speaking and listening, attention is also given to reading and writing. Students will learn 57 kanji. Students will also acquire general knowledge of the Japanese people and their culture.

FGN201: INTERMEDIATE JAPANESE I
Offered in fall semester
COURSE
OBJECTIVES:
Students
will acquire an
intermediate level understanding of the Japanese language.
They will learn conversational forms of verbs, complex sentence
structure, expressions of comparison, advanced verb forms, and causal
expressions.
Dialogue topics include kabuki theater, winter vacation, travel
arrangements, and expressing minor aches and pains.
While emphasis is placed on speaking and listening, attention is
also given to reading and writing.
Students will learn an
additional 59
kanji.
Students will also acquire general knowledge of the Japanese people and
their culture.

COURSE
OBJECTIVES:
Students
will acquire an

structure, advanced verb forms, and giving and receiving verbs. Dialogue
topics include hospital, restaurant, Valentine’s Day, and bank.
While emphasis is placed on speaking and listening, attention is
also given to reading and writing.

additional 46 kanji.
Students will also acquire general knowledge of the Japanese people and
their culture.
ENG 212:
COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Become aware of the changes taking place in the roles of men and women
in Japanese society as reflected in
literature.
2.
Compare the images of Japanese men and women presented in earlier
readings with later ones.
3.
Examine and analyze the influence of Confucianism, Shintoism, Buddhism
and other historical facts on the
development of gender roles as presented in Japanese literature.
4.
Contrast the images of men and women presented in Western and Japanese
literature.
