Equipment List

We'll be spending a lot of time in the out of doors during this trip and each person will need some essential equipment.  Please don't go out and buy a lot of equipment before talking to me, otherwise you could end up spending several hundred dollars before we leave.  This list is not complete; I'll update it as more things come to mind.  Also, keep in mind that we will be taking a lot of road trips.  Keep your luggage manageable.   Required (REI's "day hiking checklist") Bear bell (1" jingle-bell attached to lanyard, pack or jacket). Belt. Compass (REI's "the basics of navigation"). Day pack with a stable harness (REI's "how to choose a daypack")—waist and sternum straps, well-padded shoulder straps—should be large enough to carry everything below plus extra set of clothing (REI's "packing a backpack"). Emergency survival kit, includes many items in this list (REI's "if you become lost"). Flashlight and extra batteries. Garbage bag. Gloves/mittens. Hat or cap (might want more than one—stocking cap and sun hat). Hiking boots, sturdy, water-resistant with spare laces (Campmor's guide to boots, REI's "breaking in boots"). Hiking socks (non-cotton). Insect repellent. Iodine tablets or water filter (REI's "how to choose a water filter or purifier" and "understanding water treatment"). Journal and/or sketch book. Layered outergarments (REI's "choosing the right clothing"). Maps (Dr. Dave will carry, not everyone needs each map). Personal first aid kit (REI's "first aid checklist"). Pocket knife or multi-tool (cannot be carried on airliners; must be in checked baggage). Rain gear (REI's "how to choose rainwear"). Sunscreen. Sunglasses. Toilet paper. Water bottles (2 L equivalent). Waterproof matches and firestarter. Whistle. Optional  Backpacking stove (fuel cannot be flown on airliners; we won't be camping). Camera. Fanny pack or field bag. Field guides. Film and x-ray film shield. Fishing tackle. Magnifying lens. Monopod/telescoping walking stick. Rope. Snacks (in sealable containers). Tripod. Trowel.
