Mission Statement

The chief mission of Spragins House is to enhance educational opportunities for freshman students at Lyon College.

Our guiding principle is a belief that learning occurs in many venues under a variety of circumstances, both structured and informal.  Spragins House is a learning community that values and respects diverse experiences and opinions.  All members of the community contribute to an environment built on the ideals of honor, tolerance, and reason.

The resident faculty mentor assists students in adjusting to the demands of college life.   The mission of the community is carried out through various activities:

    1) Small group dinners: Once a week, the resident faculty mentor invites freshmen to enjoy a meal at the residence.  Administrators, faculty and/or staff are invited, as well.  This setting allows people to come together in a welcoming environment different from the "formality" of the classroom.

    2)  Programming:  The resident faculty mentor provides activities that relate to both the social and intellectual growth of students. For the coming year, there are two film series, stress breaks, receptions for guest speakers, and workshops. During the fall semester, an advisory panel of freshmen will come together and plan events for the spring.

    3)  Sponsorship and collaboration: Spragins House is supportive of many extracurricular activities conducted by student organizations throughout the year.  The resident faculty mentor works closely with the residence life staff, the Young House faculty mentor, and the convocations committees.
