DS Tom Foote

Tom started learning drumming from his grandfather (Joseph Bevington) at the age of eight (1970). Josesph was trained in the British Army tradition and Tom still has a couple of his really old books. The style was 100% authentic rudimental marching music.

After bring referred to another ex-WWI drummer (Jack Strickland), Tom was sent to Jimmy Agnew (St. Catherines, Ontario Canada) to further his percussion skills. At the same time he was being trained classically through his local school district. With Jimmy's example of strict study habits the Niagara and District Corp (Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada) advanced to Grade I, where the band unfortunately dissolved. Tom received PPBSO Champion Supreme Honors through all grade levels during this time period (‘70-‘81?).

Tom played briefly with "The Clan McFarlane", and then joined the 78th Fraser’s with Reid Maxwell as lead. He played with them until '86 (and got married to his soul-mate, Kim).

After a brief hiatus he began to instruct locally and got the Pipe Band bug again. The next thing Tom knew he was playing for the Toronto Metro Police Band ('90-'95?) with his friend Drew Duthart (Alex's son). He played with them until his first child (Sarah- now 12) became old enough to make life next to impossible at the games. Soon another child (Rebecca-10) arrived and competitive playing came to a halt for a while, although he continued to instruct.

Tom and Kim have had another child since (Rachael-5) and he has been playing again competitively.

In 2001 he instructed the Lyon College drum line in preparation for their trip to the world championships in Scotland. The band placed 2nd in the 3B contest.

He is now playing with the same corps members that played with Toronto Police in the 90's. They were with Peel Regional Police, but have moved to Toronto Police (L/D Doug Stronach) as of 2005.

Outside of drumming Tom is Director of Optical Services at Reed Eye Associates, Rochester, NY. www.reedeye.com
