The outfits for the Cake Walk are slightly different than the usual Highland or National wear. The girl’s outfit is fairly vague being described as having only a “full skirt” and the boy’s outfit is much more specific. He is to wear a tail coat, have a top hat and a cane (both the hat and the cane are props used in the dance)!  
The younger girls will also be doing a choreography that will be choreographed early in the year. Details will follow.

Text Box: The summer is coming to a close and with that close brings many events for the Lyon College Lads and Lassies Highland Dance Program  As usual, we will be having our Highland Dance Mini Camp to kick off the year.
Our older girls class will be learning and performing the Cake Walk for our choreography this year. The Cake Walk is one of the youngest dances in Highland dancing. It is a courting dance that originated from the 30’s and is, in my opinion, very unique and fun to both watch and dance. Although it is officially in the Highland (to be specific the Scottish Dance Teachers Association) dance book, therefore a dance that can be competed, it  obvi

The basic “story” being shown in the Cake Walk is a  boy attempting to dance with a girl who only refuses him and scolds him until the very end. The pleading motions of the boy show his desperate state of admiration for the girl. In some Cake Walks, the boy can get angry with the girl and scold her back…. I’ve yet to decide if our “boys” will be getting mad back or not!  Of course, in the end, the boy and girl unite, allowing for a perfect courting dance.

COLLEEN ROSE
Please help me welcome our new dance assistant Colleen Rose! Colleen is from St Louis, Missouri and is a Highland dancer She will be job shadowing me over the next year, helping out with dance classes and other events so that she can fully take over my position once I have graduated. Let’s all please make her feel welcome and comfortable in her freshman transition, as well as in the start of her dance instruction.
