There wasn't as good a turnout as we hoped for this Piobaireachd society, but we made do with what we had. It was a wee bitty nippy outside so we conducted the event inside the Scottish Heritage Building. Jimmy was kind enbough to bring donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate for all those that participated. Kenton, Jimmy, Grey, and Sergei all showed up for the meeting. Grey first played "Glengary's Lament" with a first variation; he's slowly picking up the big music and he seems to get better everyday, tis amazin' what a little practice does for a player. If my rusty bear trap of brain serves me correctly, Kenton played a nice rendition of "The Field of Gold" and "Struan Robertson's Salute." Kenton's pipe as usual had immaculate drone quality and perfect pitch, easily aquired when you have a 100 year old set of Henderson's. He then played a bit of his competition MSR and a couple other light pieces. We all took breaks in between the players for coffee and donuts and a little banter. I was next up. I started out with "Clan Campbell's Gathering" and then played "The Boat Tune"; I thought it sounded pretty decent and my drones sounded magnificient for being inside. I'm slowly progressing with the crunluath movements and getting better day by day; I just need not to even think about the movement itself and let it flow effortlessly and relax while doing so, it's easier said than done. Jimmy of course played a whole slew of light tunes and several piobaireachd piecs that I nae can recall, but I recall them being the usual fine quality. Sergei was convinced to have a go at it, and played a ground while reading off the music from a music stand and did an altogether good job of it. He is expecting the arrival by post of a recently purchased stand of 60s era Hardies that should be a very nice pipe indeed. The band is getting anxious and prepared for the Clinton Library gig this week; it promises to be a big'un.
