2009-2010 Nichols International Study Abroad Courses


THE 399: LONDON THEATRE (England). 1 credit, Winter 2009. Dr. Michael Counts.  Attend performances at a wide variety of London theatres, including the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford on Avon (Shakespeare’s birthplace), the National Theatre, and fringe theatre in unusual places. The group will also go on a backstage tour of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Prerequisite: THE 101 or ENG 110. Enrollment limit: 16.  Course fee: $600-650*

ANT 399/BIO 399a: TROPICAL BIOLOGY AND SOUTHEAST ASIAN CULTURE (Malaysia). 1 credit. Spring 2010. Dr. Gloria Everson and Dr. Han Ong. This course will focus on exploring the island of Penang, which has a large tropical micro-ecosystem preserve. In addition, the diversity of tropical marine life will be explored through a diving excursion. The dynamics of Southeast Asian cultures, colonial influences and diverse religious practices will also be studied on the island. Prerequisites: BIO 100 or BIO 110 and ANT 101. Enrollment limit: 20. BIO 399b: MARINE BIOLOGY AND ISLAND CULTURE (Bahamas). 1 credit, Spring 2010, Dr. Mark Schram.  Sailing aboard a big ship and stopping on 10 islands and cays, students will learn about sailing, navigation, marine biology, and the cultural aspects of the select Caribbean islands where their boat will call.  They will make snorkeling expeditions to explore the biology and ecology of several reef areas, and visit tropical forests, historical landmarks, a marine station, and the landing sites of both Columbus and several celebrated pirates.  Prerequisites: BIO 112 and BIO 280. Students must be strong swimmers. Preference may be given to students who have also completed BIO 340.  Enrollment limit: 12. Estimated course fee: $550-600*

FRN 399: AMERICAN EXPATRIATES IN FRANCE (France). 1 credit, Spring 2010, Dr. Catherine Bordeau. This course examines American expatriates in France in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. As Americans in France themselves, students will visit key historical and cultural sites in Paris and Nice and reflect on the experience of being Americans in France.  Prerequisite: FRN 102.  Enrollment limit: 16.  Course fee: $600-650*

PSY 399: EUROPEAN DEVELOPMENTAL THEORISTS (Switzerland). 1 credit. Spring 2010, Dr. Nikki Yonts. In this course, students will explore the contributions of major European psychologists to the study of child development: primarily Piaget, but also Freud, Erikson, and Jung. Traveling to Switzerland, they will visit key historical, educational, and recreational sites associated with these theorists, such as the Foundation Archives of Jean Piaget in Geneva, Chateau de Chillon in the Lake Geneva region, and various Swiss parks and tourist attractions specifically designed as educational centers for young children. Prerequisite: EDU/PSY 290 or PSY 310. Enrollment limit: 12.  Course fee: $600-650*  

SPN 399: ANCIENT AND MODERN MEXICO (Mexico). 1 credit. Spring 2010, Dr. Monica Rodriguez. This course intends to explore Mexico, past and present. Students will appreciate how Mexico has changed by visiting ancient ruins, getting a taste of colonial lifestyle, and experiencing modern, urban life in Mexico City. Prerequisites: SPN 102. Enrollment limit: 10. Course fee: $600-650*
