POL 399: THE BLUE DANUBE: VIENNA, BUDAPEST & BEYOND/ 1 credit, Winter 2008/ 2009, Roulier. Visit the two great metropolises of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Vienna and Budapest, where you’ll learn about their history, culture and politics, with an emphasis the intellectual history of fin-de-siecle Vienna and the important thinkers of that time, such as Freud, Musil, Klimt and Schoenberg. THIS COURSE WILL TRAVEL BETWEEN THE FALL AND SPRING SEMESTERS. A day of skiing in the Alps is optional and not included in the course fee. Prerequisite: RPH 202 or HIS 202. ART/MUS 399: MODERN ART AND MUSIC: LONDON & AMSTERDAM/ 1 credit, Spring 2009, LeJuene, Stinson. This interdisciplinary course will explore the cultural, historical and aesthetic relationship between art and music, and the spirit of freedom and experimentation that prevailed in 20th century Europe, producing significant examples of both. You’ll visit museums and galleries, and attend concerts in both London and Amsterdam, experiencing the evolution of the fine arts in these cities and Europe as a whole. Prerequisite: ART 101 or MUS 105. Estimated course fee: $550-600*.
BIO 399A/ANT 399: BELIZE: CORAL REEF BIOLOGY AND MAYAN ARCHAEOLOGY/ 1 credit, Spring 2009, Lindblom, Everson. Two for the price of one! Explore the biology of tropical coral reefs, seeing their unique organisms and ecosystems, and visit Mayan archaeological sites to explore ancient cultural systems. You’ll also interact with present-day cultures in this amazingly diverse country. Prerequisites: ANT 101 or ANT 330 AND BIO 280. Estimated course fee: $500-550*.
BIO 399B: ECOSYSTEMS OF NORTHWESTERN CANADA/ 1 credits, Spring 2009, Thomas. This course introduces students to the biology, history and culture of Northwestern Canada, especially the Yukon Territory. Visit regional museums, a gold rush town, and one of the largest protected wild areas in the world, Kluane National Park. Be prepared for lots of hiking! Prerequisite: BIO 110 and BIO 112 OR BIO 100 – Biodiversity. Concurrent enrollment in BIO 280 is required. Estimated course fee: $500*.
RPH 399A/HIS 399: A QUEST
FOR BEAUTY: HISTORY & PHILOSOPHY OF GREECE/ 1 credit, Spring 2009, Beck.
While based in Athens, students will visit some of the most famous sites of
ancient Greek civilization and early Christianity, including the Acropolis, the
temple to Hephaestus and Byzantine churches. A 5-day excursion takes you to
Epidarus, Corinth (where Paul preached), Micenae (Agamemnon’s tomb), Meteora
(monasteries), and Delphi, and you’ll have a chance to explore the volcanic
islands Hydra, Aegina and Poros. Prerequisite: HIS 201 or RPH 201. Estimated

RPH 399B: THEOLOGY OF THE HAMMER: CHRISTIAN ETHICS IN ACTION/ 1 credit, Spring 2009, Bube. Guatemala, Habitat for Humanity is working to eliminate substandard housing for the poor. In this service learning course, you will help them, in partnership with local families and volunteers. You’ll learn the theology behind one of the most widely recognized Christian service organizations in the world, begin to understand the cultural, economic and religious experiences of those in need, learn how service and Christian faith are related in practice, and, finally, help build a house. SPN 300: BONUS for students of Spanish: besides an RPH credit, you can get Spanish Field Experience credit! You’ll have ample opportunity to practice your Spanish language and translating skills, providing assistance to the entire group while relating to the local population on a deeper level. Prerequisite: RPH 320 - special version of this course, concurrent with 399. SPN 102 also required to get credit for SPN 300. Estimated course fee: $350-450*.
