Information About John Quincy Wolf Jr. and the Collection 

John Quincy Wolf Jr. (1901-1972) was a distinguished folklorist and longtime English professor at Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College).  A native of Batesville, Arkansas, Wolf graduated from Lyon (then Arkansas) College in 1922 and went on to earn advanced degrees in English from Vanderbilt (M.A.) and the Johns Hopkins University (Ph.D.)  Beginning in the 1950s, Wolf, along with his wife Bess (1908-  ), traipsed around the mid-South, recording mountain music in the Ozarks, the blues in the Delta, and sacred harp singers in Mississippi and Alabama.  Wolf is perhaps best known, however, for editing his father’s reminiscences into Life in the Leatherwoods, which has since become a classic and much-loved first-hand account of growing up in the Ozarks in the late 19^th century.  (For more biographical information about John Quincy Wolf Jr. please visit Lyon College’s Wolf Collection website.) 

The collection consists mainly of correspondence between Wolf and other folklorists or folk arts and music demonstrators.  Correspondents include Alan Lomax, Jimmie Driftwood, and Almeda Riddle.  The collection also includes other miscellanea, such as flyers, clippings, song lyrics, and photographs.  Gene Hyde and James Higgins processed the collection in 1998; in 2002 Kim Halpain and Judy Blackwell completed detailed indexing and the website finding aid.  The collection is open for research.
