How to Find Cited Materials.
Books
Here's an example of a book citation that you may
have found looking in one of our databases or print indexes.
Fleming, Thomas. Liberty!:
The American Revolution.
New York: Viking, 1997
You know it is a book because there's only one
title (Liberty!: The American Revolution).
Here's how to get it. Go to
The Mabee-Simpson
library Catalog,
type in the title and search for it.
If we don't have it, then go to
Worldcat and order it
online from the Inter-library Loan Department.
Articles
Articles are trickier. Here's an example of
an article cite:
Evnine, Simon J. "The Universality of Logic: On the
Connection
between Rationality and Logical Ability."
Mind 110.438 (2001). 31 July 2001
<http://www3.oup.co.uk/mind/>.
You can tell this is an article citation because there
are two titles: "The Universality of Logic...," is the article
title. There is also the
underlined title of the journal: Mind.
The numbers are the volume, page number, and year
published. Notice also that the cite includes the web URL.
Since most electronic databases are licensed and copyrighted, you
probably can't use the URL to see the article. Now it's time to do
the following.
To see if we have
the journal "Mind" search in
Full-Text Electronic
and Paper Journals
on the library's home page. Type the title "Mind" into the search box. You'll get a list of
titles and you'll find Mind is one we carry. If you click on the blue link below
the title, it will lead
you into the database that contains this article.
If this search was unsuccessful, you could
also go
into
The Mabee-Simpson
library Catalog using the periodical title search to see if we have Mind in print
at the library.
If that failed, you could order it from
Interlibrary Loan.
