November 2004
| Presidential Legacies
Dr. David Stricklin, Associate Professor of History at Lyon
College, spoke on election eve, November 1, at 3 PM @ the
library. His lecture was about the way individual presidents have
put their stamp on the office, the U.S. government, the nation, and
the broader world, particularly presidents who strengthened the
country's commitment to broadening democracy. He offered some
predictions about the legacies of the current Bush Administration,
saying Bush's conduct of the presidency so far has a good chance of
splitting the Republican Party, many of whose members are
dissatisfied with the lack of fiscal discipline shown by the
Administration. Speaking the day before the election, he predicted
only half-jokingly that if Bush won the election, "You can go ahead
and pencil in Hillary Rodham Clinton as the next President of the
United States!" because Bush will have split the Republicans,
alienated many traditional conservatives, and made Democrats
determined to nominate a candidate who will make a better showing
than Kerry did. If Kerry were to win the presidency, Stricklin said,
he will have a hard time getting anything done because of the deep
divisions in the country and the fact that the House and Senate will
probably stay under the control of the Republicans, though he will
manage to rebuild some of the country's ties to other nations Bush
has alienated. |
