I.N.S.: Immigration and Naturalization Service
Visa: Stamp in passport obtained from United States Embassy or Consulate giving you permission to come to the United States. These are only issued outside of the United States and may expire, without penalty, so long as you remain in the U.S. and maintain your status.
Passport: Any travel document issued by competent authority showing the bearer's origin, identity, and nationality, if any, which is valid for entry of the bearer into a foreign country. (I.N.A. paragraph 101 (a) (30))
Non-immigrant: An individual with no intent to immigrate to the United States; maintains a residence in their home country which they do not intend to abandon.
F-1: Non-immigrant classification for a student in an academic or language program.
F-2: Spouse, child, or dependent of an F-1 student.
H-1: Visa classification for a temporary worker of distinguished merit and ability.
H-4: Spouse, child, or dependent of an H-1 worker.
J-1: Visa classification for an Exchange Visitor student or professor.
J-2: Spouse, child, or dependent of a J-1 Exchange Visitor.
B-2: Visitor's visa is for short-term status. This is not valid for students pursuing an educational program.
I-20: Certificate of Eligibility used to obtain an F-1 visa to enter the United States.
IAP-66: Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor status used to obtain a J-1 visa to enter the U.S.
I-20ID: Pages 3 and 4 of the I-20. Retained by the student to be used for recording school transfers, travel endorsements, recording of off-campus employment for curricular and optional practical training authorizations for F-1 students. Permanently retained by student.
I-94: Arrival/departure form issued to all non-immigrants upon arrival in the United States. It is surrendered upon departure. Should be kept in passport at all times. Shows length of stay authorized and non-immigrant category.
