SEVERE ECONOMIC HARDSHIP

bullet

To apply, the student must have been in F-1 status for one full academic year, be in good academic standing, and carry a full-time course load.

bullet

The student must also demonstrate that there is unforeseen severe economic hardship, that employment opportunities on campus are unavailable or insufficient, and that the employment will not interfere with full-time study.

bullet

Employment is limited to 20 hours per week (maximum in a given week, not an average) while school is in session; full-time during vacations or holidays.

bullet

The application requires endorsement by the designated school official (DSO) and approval by the DHS.  If employment is approved, then DHS issues an EAD (employment authorization document).

bullet

DHS approval is granted for one-year intervals.  The EAD issued by DHS will display the starting and ending dates of employment authorization and the I-20 must show DSO recommendation.
