Optional Practical Training

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is defined in the regulations as "temporary employment for practical training directly related to the student's major area of study." (8 C.F.R. § 214.2(f)(10)(ii).

USCIS approval is required prior to beginning OPT employment.  In order to apply a student must have been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis at a DHS approved school for one full academic year before being eligible for OPT.

Most students apply for post-completion OPT but pre-completion OPT is allowed but different rules apply.
