Chapter 3: COR100 LIT: Library Services

"You see, I don't believe that libraries should be drab places where people sit in silence, and that's been the main reason for our policy of employing wild animals as librarians." Grahm Chapman from Episode 10 of Monty Python's Flying Circus, 1970

About Us

  • On your quiz I'll ask you when we're open and some questions about our policies and about the information below.

We're certainly not wild animals but you can read a bit about us by clicking on the link:  "Library Services" at the library's home page at library.lyon.edu.  This page also tells you when we are open, what our policies are, etc.

The Library's Home Page  (http://library.lyon.edu)

When you type in:  http://library.lyon.edu, the middle section of the page looks like this and includes books, journal articles, and newspaper articles.

]

Books

When you click on the "books" link you see the following:

  1. iLink is our library catalog of what we own.

  2. WorldCat is an international catalog of books.  You can order inter-library loan books online from WorldCat.

  3. BooksInPrint Patron is a place to go to get book reviews and to see what's currently in print.

  4. The Library of Congress Subject Headings are really helpful to clarify searches and to figure out the call numbers of subjects in the library.

Journal Articles

The first five links are probably where you'll find most of your material for a research paper from articles.

  • Academic Search Premier offers searching in all disciplines.  It is indeed a mega-data and includes full-text or citation/abstracts.

  • LexisNexis provides full-text newspaper coverage from all major newspapers in America and in the world.  That's a bold statement, but true.    Our own Arkansas Democrat is in here.

  • JSTOR is full text and contains complete runs of journals, from the year they were first published until now.  Historian types take note!

  • Project Muse is another completely full-text DB that concentrates in the area of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts.

  •  Research Library is another mega-data DB that offers searching in all disciplines with a mix of full-text and citation/abstract.

Full-Text Electronic or Paper Journals has a great search box for journal titles.  If you have a citation and need to know if we have the journal, use the search box for your journal title and see if we have your article. If we have the full-text electronic, all you have to do is print off the entire article.  It also lists any paper copy we have in the library.  So you get a list of all the electronic and paper copy that we own.

A-Z Databases is the complete list of all the databases we own.  It also gives you the date ranges and whether or not it's citation or full-text.

  • For your quiz, I'll ask you to do a search in one of the above databases and tell me about your results.

Newspaper Articles

Lexis Nexis offers more than 20 years of Newspaper articles in most of the major newspapers in America and in foreign countries.  The Arkansas Democrat is also indexed in it.

The New York Times Historical  database offers the full-text of the article from 1851-2001.

The Wall Street Journal Historical database offers the full-text of the article from 1889-1987.

  • For your quiz I might ask you to find the answer to a question in one of the above.

Reference 24/7, Topic Searches, Current Topics,
Biography, Citing, and Consumer Links.

Again, when you go to:  library.lyon.edu you'll see more links in the right hand column.  Here's what we have:

Reference 24/7

This is a great place to go to get brief, accurate information on topics.  Take a look at the Oxford Reference Collection.  There are quotation books, encyclopedias, bilingual language dictionaries and much, much more.

  • For your quiz I might ask you to find the answer to a question in the Oxford Reference Collection.

Topic Searches

These links are lean and mean.  They are for those who need in-depth material about specific subjects.  For instance, if you want the latest research about AIDS, you would go to the Sciences link and look up the government  databases for health and medicine.  Try it.

  • For your quiz I might ask you the names of the 2 government AIDS databases listed in the Sciences page.

Current Topics

Here's a good place to go if you need an idea for a topic, or if you want to see what the latest hot topics are.

  • For the quiz, I might ask you to know the names of these 4 databases.

Biography

When you click on the "Biography" Link, notice that the first 3 links are the most important.  Try them first.  American National Biography is strictly American Bio's. The other two include biographies around the world.

Citing

When you click on the Citing link this is what you see.  This is a great place for figuring out how to cite items in your first college research paper.  This link takes you to Duke University's Library site.  The first link on this page helps you cite sources within your paper and the second link will help you assemble that very important bibliography list at the end of your paper.

  • For your quiz I might ask you to pick out an example of the MLA style of citing 2 authors for a book.  Refer to the second link:  Assembling a List of Works Cited to see those example.

Consumer Links

If you click on this link, you get a handful of links that are handy.  They are just links that the librarians have found that they like.  There are ones on travel and phone prices, recipes, pet care, health care, etc.   I guess the key words here are fun and money savers.  Here's a sample of what you see when you click on consumer links:

More about the blue bar on the right:

These links are pretty self-explanatory.  Take a look at them because I could ask you questions about them on the quiz like:
True or False, About Us refers to the librarian's rock band "The Screaming Book Nerds."  It could be true, you never know.  Actually, About Us will tell you the library's hours, policies, mission, etc.

If you have any questions about how to get to the library databases from off-campus, go to the How To's.  These lessons from COR100LIT are also in the Tutorials link. Any special tutorials for specific classes are also in here.

The Press Room tells you what events are happening at the library.  We are already planning an evening of romantic poetry readings on Valentine's day with poems read by Andrea Budy, our artist-in-residence, and other students and faculty. Drs. Roulier and Gitz are on the calendar for discussions about the Bill of Rights in September, and International Politics in January.  And there's more coming.

Arklink  is a site that gives you a list of all the libraries in Arkansas where you can check out books because you are a Lyon College student.  Be sure to get your ArkLink card at our front desk before you travel.  Sometimes, when time is precious and inter-library loan won't do, our students drive to these other libraries for materials they need.

The Regional Studies Center  has an extensive collection of regional books, periodicals, newspapers, maps, and genealogical materials, as well as the Lyon College archives and a collection of materials related to the history of Lyon College.

The History of the Library gives a brief history not only of the library, but of the tornado cross that is sitting in the courtyard.

And of the course there is a convenient Lyonnet and E-mail link for youR use.

The Library Building

There are lots of places to study and relax.  We're open late most nights and it is quiet.  There's a courtyard for fresh air and highly coveted study rooms by the elevator on the third floor.  We even allow snacks and drinks if the drinks have a cover or lid.  The front desk staff are friendly and usually don't bite.  We want you to come by and stay awhile, whether it be for studying, or meeting your friends, or napping, or whatever.  Welcome to the Mabee-Simpson Library.
