A. U.S. Mail
Daily Distribution Schedule:
The Lyon College Mailroom is responsible for retrieving the mail from the U.S. Post Office each morning and then distributing that mail around campus. The daily distribution schedules are as follows:
Administrative Office Mail:
Delivery of U.S. Mail & UPS, etc.
Packages & Pick up of Outgoing Mail before 11:00 a.m., Monday-Friday
Student Mail:
Delivery to Student Boxes before 12:00 noon, Monday-Friday
Student Package Pick Up
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Monday-Friday ONLY in the
College Mailroom
All departmental outgoing mail must have an account number. If you have a single piece just right it in the upper left or right hand corner. If you have a stack rubber band them together and right the account number on the first piece or attach a sticky note. You may bring outgoing US Mail to the Mailroom until 4:00 p.m. daily. However, if you have a large mailing (more than 100 pieces) please do not wait until 4:00 p.m. to bring it as we might not be able to process the mail before the US Post Office picks up the daily mail at 5:00 p.m.
Any Lyon College student or employee may bring personal mail to the mailroom and pay the appropriate fee to have their mail processed. You must pay in advance for outgoing mail. We do not process mail and then bill you at a later date, nor can we charge to student accounts.
Handling of Certified Mail, etc.:
It is the policy of Lyon College Mailroom to notify each recipient (staff and students) through campus mail about any mail received from the U.S. Post Office that requires a signature. These pieces of mail may be retrieved from the Mailroom between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and will require a signature.
You can send a certified letter from the Lyon College Mailroom. However, if you wish to have your receipt stamped by the U.S. Post Office, you must take it to the Post Office located downtown at 4th and College Streets.
Handling of Parcels for Students:
You will be notified through campus mail about any package too large for your mailbox. These packages can be picked up between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday ONLY. Students will not be admitted to the mailroom to pick up packages after hours. These measures are necessary to insure proper delivery of packages.
Forwarding Services for Students:
All forwarding services for Lyon College students must be handled through the Lyon College Mailroom. The U.S. Post Office will no longer honor forwarding orders from Lyon College students individually. It will be responsibility of each student to fill out a forwarding order with the Mailroom before they leave campus.
Students studying abroad for a semester need to fill out a temporary forwarding order before they leave campus. We do not have the facilities to hold a student’s mail for an entire semester.
Temporary forwarding of student mail will only be offered between the spring and fall semesters.
Permanent forwarding will be offered when a student leaves Lyon College. The only classes of mail that can be forwarded through the U.S. Post Office are first and second.
First Class Mail will be forwarded for 4 months (permanent orders) then returned to sender.
Second Class Mail (magazines, etc.) can only be forwarded for 60 days (U.S. Postal Regulations) then they will be returned to sender. This applies to permanent and temporary forwarding orders. Therefore, to insure uninterrupted delivery of magazines each student should contact their subscriptions and have their addresses changed prior to leaving campus.
All other classes of mail will be returned to sender if sender requests an address correction OR destroyed.
Once a student graduates, their mail will be returned to sender unless they fill out a forwarding order with the Mailroom. The exceptions to this rule are: students traveling with the Nichols Travel Programs (who will have until the end of May to forward their mail); and graduating students remaining in campus housing for the summer
If returning students are not living on campus in the summer OR picking up mail on at least a weekly basis, their mail will be returned to sender. We do not have the space to hold mail for returning students during the summer months.
UPS delivers and picks up from the Mailroom on a
daily basis. Outgoing UPS packages must be in the Mailroom no later than
11:30 a.m. to be included in that day’s shipment, and you must have a
street address. The policy for sending personal UPS packages is the same as
for outgoing U.S. Mail. Incoming UPS packages will be delivered to
administrative offices during the next morning’s mail route.
FedEx delivers to campus, but does not pick-up on a daily basis. However, we can drop out-going packages at one of the local drop boxes on a daily basis. FedEx outgoing packages to be taken by the Mailroom to the drop box must be in the Mailroom no later than 1:00 p.m. and require both a street address and a telephone number. Also, if we need a pick-up for a package too large for the drop box, we may call for FedEx and request one – that request must be made before 2:00 p.m. The policy for sending personal FedEx packages is the same as for outgoing U.S. Mail.
