Pipers get early scare, but finish on top at Williams Baptist

(September 3, 2004) Walnut Ridge, AR – The Lyon Volleyball team came out ready to play, for the first 25 points Friday night at Walnut Ridge.  The Pipers dominated game one and held a lead of 25-16.  At that point the match turned as Williams started to gain momentum.  They went on a 16-5 run to hand Lyon its first game loss of the season, 32-30.  Game two was another story altogether.  Lyon didn’t stop at 25 and ended the game with a decisive 30-11 score.  In game three, Lyon continued to control the match, never trailing and winning 30-25.  The fourth game proved to be another story.  Williams broke out to an early lead on some key mistakes by the Pipers.  Lyon had used their last timeout looking at the short end of a 13-5 score.  Yet, this Piper team would not give in.  Determined, they set out on a plan to take game four and ultimately the match.  Trailing throughout, the Pipers managed to knot the score at 28-28.  The rowdy crowd began to get into the game and try to force a game 5, but the Pipers would hear nothing of it, finishing off Williams 32-30.  Leading the way for the Pipers was Sophomore Alyson Boone with 12 kills and 7 aces.  Ceca Brckalo added 18 kills, while Alison Sablick and Daria Paunovic both put away 13 kills.  Susie Harper kept her amazing defensive display up as she amassed 27 digs in the four game match.

“We were not prepared for the Williams Baptist team we faced,” stated Coach Dee.  “That (WBC) team played a great match.  We have a lot of things to work on, but I am amazed at these ladies and their will to win.  I think that teamwork was the key ingredient to winning that match.”

The ladies will face another tough opponent when they travel to Ouachita Baptist on September 7.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
