Pipers end season long win streak at Union

(September 28, 2004) Jackson, TN- The Union University Bulldogs ended the Lyon Volleyball win streak at 5 matches on Tuesday night at home.  The game scores were 30-9, 30-21, and 30-28.  The Pipers, playing without junior setter Chelsea Gilliam, came out a little discombobulated during the first game.  They had to try and find out where they were in each rotation and couldn’t pull it together against a very aggressive offense of Union.  Senior Ceca Brckalo led the way for Lyon with 15 kills while junior Susie Harper played with a cold, but still dug out 16 balls for the Piper defense.

“I am impressed with the ladies performance after the first game.  Many teams would have just folded and given up”, remarked Coach Justin Dee, “but not this team.  Their heart and determination broke through during game two and game three.  Not having Chelsea make the trip, and having Susie playing sick, we had to have a lot of things happen for us to come out of that gym victorious.  You can’t beat a team like Union unless you bring your ‘A’ game.  The ladies pulled together and played very well.  I wish we would have taken that third game, but overall I am very happy with the way our ladies performed.”

The ladies make a weekend road trip to Cumberland and Trevecca on Friday and Saturday this week.  Friday’s match is scheduled for 6pm and Saturday is due to start at noon.  The ladies will look to keep their second place standing and keep Union within reach atop of the Transouth conference.
