Pipers Drop Their First Match of the Season

(Sept. 7, 2004) Arkadelphia, AR – The Lyon College Lady Pipers dropped their first match of the young season to a very talented Ouachita Baptist team.

After leading most of the way through the first game, the ladies failed to put together a final push, and dropped game 1, 30-23.  Game two was a different story, as Ouachita came out and stayed up, dropping the Pipers 30-13.  Lyon hit -.021 in the second game while Ouachita hit .310, which accounted for the lopsided win by the Tigers.  The Lyon team failed to give up though, facing a three game sweep, the Pipers started up and stayed up.  The ladies did slow near the end of the game, but came out on top at 32-30.  Game four was do or die for the Pipers and the game was close until about 17-17.  Then the lady tigers pulled away, winning the match 30-19.

Leading the way for the Pipers was Senior TranSouth Player of the Week, Ceca Brckalo.  Ceca drove home 14 kills with 0 errors.  Also, making her presence felt was Junior TranSouth and Region XI Libero of the week, Susie Harper.  Susie had a season high 34 digs to help keep the Pipers in the match.

“We played well tonight,” stated Coach Dee.  “But to beat a team like Ouachita, we have to play great.  Susie (Harper) played unbelievable tonight.  She proved to everyone in the Region that she deserves to be Libero of the week.  Our offense was well executed as well.  Our setters distributed the ball well, and our hitters executed, but our blocking was lacking.  We have yet to see an offense like (Ouachita) and it showed in our blocking efforts.”

The Lady Pipers travel to Memphis Saturday to take on Rhodes College.  Match time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
