SOFTBALL RULES
LYON COLLEGE
- All games will be six
innings or one hour, whichever comes first. If the sixth inning is started
before the time limit, it must be completed.
- The pitcher must have
both feet on the pitching rubber when he starts his/her delivery. Five
warm-up throws are permitted for a new pitcher.
- The delivery of every
pitch must be completely underhanded and must be at least 3-10 ft from the
point of release.
- It is the
responsibility of each team to have ten players present for each game.
- The minimum number of
players to begin a game is seven.
- A team may play ten
players at any time, even if the opposition has only seven players.
- A batter will be
declared out if:
- A bunt is attempted
- A half-swing
- Fouling the third
strike
- A dropped third
strike
- A runner must stay on
base until the batter makes contact with the ball.
- A runner may not
steal.
- A runner is allowed
one base on an overthrow in foul territory, but he must make it.
- A runner may take as
many bases as possible on an overthrow in fair territory.
- There is a five run
limit per inning for all games.
- The starting 10
players may re-enter the game one time. Each player that returns to the game
must occupy his/her original position in the batting order.
- The sixth inning is
the only unlimited run inning, unless the game fails to enter the sixth. If
the 4th inning has not been completed before 50 minutes of the
allotted hour, the 5th inning will be the final, unlimited run
inning.
- If a batter is
discovered batting out-of-order, the correct batter will take his place and
assume the count.
- If a batter that is
batting out-of-order becomes a base runner, he will be called out and all
runners will return to their proper base when the defensive team appeals the
play.
