The Spanish program is dedicated to the study
and teaching of the language and literature of the Spanish-speaking world.
Spanish majors at Lyon College have the
opportunity to develop a facility in the use of
both spoken and written Spanish
and to build a knowledge of its literature and cultural
heritage. Majors in Spanish are primarily literature majors who develop
their linguistic skills as they learn the skills of literary analysis.
In this way, Spanish majors benefit in two ways. They learn a foreign
language while they sharpen their analytical skills. Many
misconceptions exist about humanities majors in general and foreign-language
majors in particular. While learning a second or third language can
open a wide variety of job opportunities, students develop other skills that
are essential to most careers and central to a liberal arts education.
Spanish majors develop critical and creative thinking, language proficiency,
and analytical skills--all needed to survive in a world that is increasingly
international and multicultural. The
Spanish major prepares students for graduate school, teaching, or a range of
professions
grounded in bilingualism.
