SPN 399: PERU: THE INCAN AND COLONIAL LEGACY/ 1 credit, Spring 2007, Rodriguez. As an introduction to South American culture and civilization, students will travel to Lima the capital of Peru, and Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Incan Empire. In the coastal city of Lima, students will visit such sites as the Government Palace, the Cathedral, and the catacombs at the San Francisco Convent, as well as museums and art galleries. From Lima, they will travel to Cuzco to visit Machu Picchu, the “lost city of the Incas” located 3399 meters above sea level. Back in Cuzco, students will encounter descendants of the Incas in the plazas and streets, and have ample opportunity to practice their Spanish language and bargaining skills while shopping. Prerequisite: SPN 102. Estimated course fee: $600*.

SPN 399: HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY SPAIN/ 1 credit, Spring 2008, Wood. Destination: Andalucía, Cádiz, and Madrid. Examine the mingling of Arabic and European cultures in historic Spain, visible in its architecture and art. See how a culture of tolerance in medieval Spain led to the nation’s development, with emphasis on its modernization and relationship to the rest of Europe. Prerequisite: SPN 102. Enrollment limit: 10*. Course fee: $500#.

ANT 399 MEXICO, TIME, AND THE MAYA/ 1 credit, Spring 2004, Gloria Everson. Traveling to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, students will witness prehistory and history side by side with modern life.They will visit the remains of ancient cities, explore the sites of the earliest European influences, and see how a developing country is making a place for itself in the modern world. Pre- or co-requisite: ANT 101. Preference given to students who have also had (in descending order) 3, 2, or 1 of the following: ANT 330, ANT 335, SPN 102. Course fee: $500.
SPN 399 SPAIN: MEDIEVAL MEETS MODERN/ 1 credit, Spring 2003, Veronica Burke. This course explores the colorful complexity of Spanish history, architecture, literature, art and culture through visits to selected regions and locales, starting in Madrid and including such sites as Segovia, Leon, and Santiago de Compostella. Prerequisite: SPN 102. Course fee: $450.
