BIO 399: MARINE BIOLOGY AND ISLAND CULTURE/ 1 credit, Spring 2007, Schram. Sailing aboard a big ship and stopping on 10 islands and cays, students will learn about sailing, navigation, marine biology, and the cultural aspects of the select Caribbean islands where their boat will call. They will make snorkeling expeditions to explore the biology and ecology of several reef areas, and visit tropical forests, historical landmarks, a marine station, and the landing sites of both Columbus and several celebrated pirates. Prerequisites: BIO 110 and strong swimming ability. Preference may be given to students who have also completed BIO 340. Estimated course fee: $550*.
ENG 399: ENGLAND IN HISTORY, LITERATURE, AND LEGEND/ 1 credit, Spring 2007, Robbins. Students will hike through the actual settings of episodes from English literature, history, and legend that they’ve studied in ENG 290-91 — visiting such places as the Brontës’ moors, Dickens’ London, a ruined Arthurian castle perched on the cliffs of Cornwall, Wordsworth’s Lake District and Hadrian’s Wall. Prerequisite: ENG 290 or 291. Estimated course fee: $600*.
HIS/MUS 399: HISTORY AND MUSIC OF EASTERN GERMANY/ 1 credit, Spring 2007, Stinson. Traveling to Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig and Wittenberg, students will visit sites related to the history and music of Eastern Germany, from the Protestant Reformation to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Particular emphasis will be placed on the Nazi regime, life in Communist East Germany, and the composer J. S. Bach. Students will attend concerts and sporting events, and visit various museums and churches. Day trips will include excursions to the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald and the sumptuous palace of Frederick the Great (known as San Souci) at Potsdam. Prerequisite: for MUS 399, MUS 105; for HIS 399, HIS 202. Estimated course fee: $600*.
RPH/HIS 399: A QUEST FOR BEAUTY: HISTORY & PHILOSOPHY OF GREECE/ 1 credit, Spring 2007, Beck. While based in Athens, students will visit some of the most famous sites of ancient Greek civilization and early Christianity, including the Acropolis, the temple to Hephaestus and Byzantine churches, with day trips to Epidarus, Corinth (where Paul preached), and Micenae (Agamemnon’s tomb). There will be overnight trips to Meteora (monasteries), Santorini (a volcanic island) and Hydra. Prerequisite: HIS 201 or RPH 201. Preference given to students with one or more of the following: RPH 140, HIS/RPH 329, HIS/RPH 354, RPH 310, RPH 351, RPH 405. Estimated course fee: $550*.
SPN 399: PERU: THE INCAN AND COLONIAL LEGACY/ 1 credit, Spring 2007, Rodriguez. As an introduction to South American culture and civilization, students will travel to Lima the capital of Peru, and Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Incan Empire. In the coastal city of Lima, students will visit such sites as the Government Palace, the Cathedral, and the catacombs at the San Francisco Convent, as well as museums and art galleries. From Lima, they will travel to Cuzco to visit Machu Picchu, the “lost city of the Incas” located 3399 meters above sea level. Back in Cuzco, students will encounter descendants of the Incas in the plazas and streets, and have ample opportunity to practice their Spanish language and bargaining skills while shopping. Prerequisite: SPN 102. Estimated course fee: $600*.
