Garner named AD of the Year in TranSouth

August 15, 2005

Terry Garner, director of athletics at Lyon College, has been named Athletic Director of the Year in the TranSouth Athletic Conference. Garner received the honor Aug. 2 at the TSAC annual meeting in Henderson, Tenn.

A vote by the conference athletic directors determines the selection, which is based on overall success of an athletic program and the leadership and dedication of the athletic director.

Garner said, “I’m  very appreciative of the award. It’s nice to be recognized by your peers.”

Lyon College athletic teams celebrated one of their most successful seasons ever this year, vying for championships in basketball, baseball and golf.

The Lyon College women’s golf team finished second in the conference this year after three straight TSAC championships. The Pipers also finished second in the NAIA Region XI golf tournament.

The baseball Scots had their best season ever, finishing the season at 48-18, the most wins ever, and setting a team record in several categories, including home runs. The slugging Scots hit 69 home runs, surpassing by a wide margin the previous record of 53.

In March, the Scots baseball team was ranked in the top 10 in the NAIA national poll. It was the first time in school history the baseball team had been ranked in a national poll. They also were near the top in the Region XI poll during the season. Early in the season the Scots had a school record win streak of 12 games.

The Scots basketball team came close to their first conference title in 21 years, but fell one point shy in the TranSouth Tournament championship game, losing to the Union University Bulldogs 76-75. It was an otherwise great season that saw the Scots rack up an 18-10 record overall and go 5-5 in the conference. And they won the first two games in the tournament before the heartbreaker against Union.

The Pipers basketball team also had a winning season, going 16-14 overall and 4-8 in the conference..

And once again, Lyon student-athletes made a good showing on the TranSouth Conference and NAIA All-Academic Teams.

Garner has been athletic director at Lyon since 1986. He also served as head basketball coach of the Scots from 1980 to 1996.

A graduate of Mablevale High School, he received his bachelor’s degree at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and his master’s from the University of Central Arkansas at Conway. At UALR, he played both basketball and baseball and he is a member of UALR’s Athletic Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Lyon College Athletic Hall of Fame and the Batesville Area Athletic Hall of Fame.
