The Mystical Arts of Tibet
Photos by Eric L. Stewart

Buddhist monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery in Tibet created a mandala sand painting in January in Holloway Theatre as part of Lyon's Diversity Week celebration. The Convocations Committee, Campus Ministries and Student Activities Council sponsored the program, the "Mystical Arts of Tibet." The monks worked on the painting for four days, beginning at the opening ceremony Tuesday and concluding with an elaborate closing ceremony Friday evening.

Creating a sand painting requires patience, skill and hard work. The Tibetan monks worked on the mandala, or cosmogram, tirelessly for four days, and these photos by student photographer Eric Stewart show the intricate process used to create the sand painting.
