Scholarship established in memory of Dr. Spragins

May 2, 2005

An endowed scholarship fund has been established in memory of Dr. C. Fitzhugh Spragins. His widow, Hope Spragins, and other family members created the fund to honor Dr. Spragins, a longtime faculty member and professor emeritus of religion at Lyon who died March 10.

“Fitzhugh was a dear friend and colleague to us all,” said Lyon President Walter Roettger. “He touched countless lives on campus and beyond. There is no better way than this of keeping his legacy alive. We are very grateful to Hope and the Spragins family for creating this scholarship.”

The Rev. Dr. C. Fitzhugh Spragins Memorial Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually to a rising junior from Arkansas with demonstrated financial need, strong Christian character and leadership ability. Preference will be given to students majoring in (in order of preference): religion and philosophy, English, science, mathematics, language or education.

A single award will be a minimum of $1,000 and not more than $2,000. The scholarship may be extended through the recipient’s senior year. Multiple awards may be given if the scholarship fund grows to a sufficient level. Recipients must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and must maintain a 3.0 in order to qualify for the following year.

The College’s financial aid office will choose award recipients.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the scholarship fund in memory of Dr. Spragins should send the contributions to Tim Bruner, vice president for institutional advancement at Lyon College, P.O. Box 2317, Batesville, AR, 72503. For more information, call  (870) 698-4211.

Other Spragins family members establishing the endowment include Kirk and Mary Spragins Kuykendall, Joel and Jeanne Spragins, and John and Catherine Spragins.
