Introduction To

Online

FirstClass is the campus E-mail, Conferencing, and Calender system at Lyon College.  The following information is intended to help familiarize new users with the basic functions and operations of the application.

You will be given examples of how to log in, recognize the contents of the User Desktop, access you personal Mailbox and read or send e-mail, make Address Book entries, use the Directory, make Calendar entries,  access the Conferences, and use the Personal Chat feature.

Remember that the Information Age is upon us.  Many of the features you will find in this system are things that you will use as commonly as the telephone throughout the rest of your college life, in grad school, and right on into the job market.  Things you learn about using FirstClass might also turn up in other applications down the road.  Be prepared.

There's a review, and four exercises at the bottom of the page.

Quick Review

After looking through the different areas of FirstClass, you
should now be able to login, recognize your Desktop and
know what to expect there.  You should be able to find
and open your Mailbox, send and read e-mail.  You should
be familiar with Address Book, and know how to make an
entry.  You should also know what the Directory is and
where to find it.  The Calendar feature is something you
should be able to find and make an entry in your personal
calendar.  You should know what the Conference feature
does, and how to read and post messages.  And finally,
You should be able to initiate or respond to an invitation to Chat.

Exercises

  • Open FirstClass and send an e-mail to the instructors' account.
The address is afish@lyon.edu  You can also find A Fish in
the directory.  We'll check to see if you mailed us.
  • Go to the Announcements Conference and read the flagged
messages.  Note how the announcement changes after it
    has been read.
  • Make a Calendar entry showing when your COR100 group
meets.  Remember, the instructors can open calendars at
random  to see if you've made an entry.  We're sneaky.
  • Activate the Chat feature, see who's online and initiate a
chat with one or more people.  Pick someone you know
and maybe someone you don't.  Might be a way to make a
    new friend.
Remember, this tutorial doesn't cover ALL the features you'll find in FirstClass, just some of the more important features.  Use the Help directory, or ask a friend how they did something.
If all else fails, call the Information Services Helpdesk at 8555.
