Poncher ties school mark, Lyon College holds off Union, 3-2
Forward Sarah Poncher tied the school mark for goals in
a season and a first-half flurry of three goals held up
under a furious Union Lady Bulldog rush to allow the
Lyon College Pipers to survive with a 3-2 win in a
TranSouth Conference affair at Lyon Soccer Field.
Poncher drew first blood with her sixth goal of the
season in the 16th minute -- tying the record
set by Christina Bass in 2003 -- to give the Pipers a
1-0 advantage.
Katie Smith then scored back-to-back goals, one in the
19th minute off an assist by Poncher and
another in the 23rd minute on an assist by
Ashley Goheen, to put Lyon up 3-0.
From there, Union’s Caitlin Zimmerman answered with two
goals of her own to close to 3-2 with three minutes
left to play. However, Lyon’s defense managed to hold,
keeping the team from dragging a defeat out of the jaws
of victory in what has been a record-setting season for
the Pipers.
Union falls to 4-4 and 0-2 in the TranSouth with the
loss.
Meanwhile, the Pipers, with a 7-1 overall record this
year, have more than doubled a previous high for wins in
a season and sit at a perfect 4-0 in the conference.
Lyon’s Katy Smith already holds the team’s single-season
assist mark and goal keeper Stephanie Henderson already
has captured the single-season shutouts record.
