Carter becomes
career
3-point leader in loss
to Lambuth
BATESVILLE, Ark.
–
It was a classic good news, bad news scenario for the
Lyon College Pipers in a 76 -72 loss to defending NAIA
National Champion and current No .17, the Lambuth
University Lady Eagles, Thursday night in TranSouth
Conference play.
The good news? Senior guard April Carter became Lyon
College's all-time 3-point leader, while Piper guard
Hollye Jernigen and forward K.K. Hodges scored a
combined 45 points. The bad news? The Pipers turned the
ball over 26 times and shot just 53 percent from the
free throw line.
Lambuth improves to 14-7 overall and 6-3 in league play.
Lyon falls to 13-7 and 4-5.
Carter scored 11 points and hit 3 of 6 treys in the
game, moving the guard into the No. 1 spot on the Lyon
College career 3-point list. The senior from Farmington,
Ark., has 211 3-pointers made, replacing the former
school record of 210 set by Brandi Love from 1990-94.
Jernigen led the Pipers with a game-high 25 points. The
junior guard hit 8 of 10 shots from the field, including
5 of 6 from 3-point range. Hodges, the reigning NAIA
National Player of the Week, pitched in 20 points,
earned six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a
steal.
Yolanda Johnson sparked the Lady Eagles with 23 points
and eight rebounds. Chytearra Kintchen helped out
Lambuth with 21 points and teammate Dee Preyer scored
19.
The Pipers closed within three points of the lead on a
Hollye Jernige free throw with :08 left in the game, but
were forced to foul. Lambuth's Tara Robinson hit 1 of 2
free throws and Lyon ran out of time on their following
possession.
Maribeth Waters also scored 10 points for the Pipers,
moving her into 10th place on the school's official
all-time points list with 1,018. Waters jumped ahead of
Rena Shavers, who had 1,015 career points from 1981-84.
