BATESVILLE, Ark. -- Maribeth Waters recorded a
double-double and three other Lyon College Pipers
teammates scored in double figures in a 76-65 win over
the No. 23-ranked Cumberland Lady Bulldogs Thursday
evening in TranSouth Conference action.
Waters scored 23 points on 10 of 17 shooting from the
field and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Pipers to
their first league victory of the season.
Lyon (10-4 overall, 1-2 in the TranSouth) moves to 4-2
in its last six meetings against the Lady Bulldogs
inside the friendly confines of Becknell Gym.
Piper guard LeAnna Peerson added 12 points six rebounds
and five assists. April Carter tallied 13 points and had
four 3-pointers. Forward K.K. Hodges pitched in 10
points and seven boards.
Ashley Matthews led the way for Cumberland (9-6, 1-2),
scoring 17 points. Alison West was the only other Lady
Bulldogs in double digits with 10 points.
Lyon held Renae Williams, Cumberland's top scorer and
No. 2 scorer in NAIA Division I (24.6 ppg before
Thursday night), to just six points. Williams did
grab 13 rebounds but hit only two of the 11 shots she
attempted from the field.
The Pipers did a number on the Lady Bulldogs as a whole,
holding the No. 5 field-goal shooting team in the nation
(47.2% headed into Thursday's contest) to just 28.6
percent from the field.
