BATESVILLE, Ark. – Maribeth Waters scored a season-high 34
points, but the Lyon College Pipers couldn't hold off
the Martin Methodist Lady RedHawks in a 73-71 firefight
Saturday in TranSouth Conference action at Becknell Gym.
Martin Methodist's Vashun Wilkins made her team's last
three points, including a layup with :33 left and a free
throw with :08 remaining. Wilkins finished the game with
a double double -- 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Waters scored her game-high total on 16 of 22 shooting
from the field and 3 of 5 from the free-throw line. The
junior forward also pulled down eight rebounds to lead
the Pipers, who fall to 9-3 overall and begin TranSouth
play 0-1.
Martin Methodist (8-5, 1-0) got a team-high 19 points
from Diane Frost and 11 points from Crystal Poindexter.
MMC's victory was its fifth consecutive in the series
and its sixth in the two team's last 11 meetings. The
Pipers' last win in the series came on Feb. 5, 2005 at
Pulaski, Tenn.
The Lady RedHawks 73 point output was only the second
time the Pipers have allowed more than 70 points this
season. On both occasions, the Pipers lost the game.
