WALNUT RIDGE -- The Lyon College Pipers opened their
2006 volleyball season with a bang Tuesday, sweeping the Williams Baptist Lady
Eagles 3-0 in a non-conference match at Walnut Ridge.
Lyon took the first game 30-23 and rallied from eight
points down in the second game to notch a 30-27 triumph. The Pipers polished off
the Lady Eagles in the third and deciding game via a 30-22 decision.
"Williams Baptist is much improved and they played us
pretty well," said Pipers head coach Justin Dee. "But when you look at it, it's
like any first game. You've got things you're doing well and things you have to
work on."
Freshman middle blocker Katie Beineke led the Pipers
(1-0) with 13 kills and added a block. Alyson Boone notched 13 kills and led the
team with 5.5 blocks. Freshman outside hitter Lauren Castleberry pitched in nine
kills and junior Daria Paunovic earned eight kills.
Piper setter Julie Arnold piled up a game-high 30
assists and sophomore libero Ann Sullivan paced the squad in both aces (2) and
digs (25).
Lyon College is in action again on Friday in the
Belhaven College Tournament against West Alabama. Game time is scheduled for
2:30 p.m.
