LEBANON, Tenn. -- The Lyon College Pipers
won two and lost one on the opening day of the
double-elimination TranSouth Conference Volleyball
Tournament, earning a trip to the conference
quarterfinals and a fourth meeting with an all too
familiar foe.
Lyon, the No. 5 seed in
the tournament, opened the tournament Friday with a 3-0
loss to No. 4 seed Union University -- 29-31, 20-30,
19-30. However, the Pipers rebounded from the Union loss
to win two five-set thrillers in succession -- a win
over No. 8 seed Bethel and an upset victory over No. 3
seed Trevecca Nazarene.
Lauren Castleberry
powered the Pipers in the Trevecca win with 19 kills,
senior Alison Sablick added 11 kills and Alyson Boone
tacked on 10. Jessica Sylvester paced the Pipers with 27
assists while Julie Arnold pitched in 20. Ann Sullivan
led the team in digs with 24.
The Pipers (19-12
overall) advance to the quarterfinals to meet Union
University, for the second time this tournament. The two
teams have played three times this season with Lyon
holding a 2-1 edge.
A spot in the conference semifinals against No. 2 seed
Freed-Hardeman awaits the winner of the match-up. The
loser of the contest is eliminated from tournament play.
