For the first time in
program history, the Lyon College Pipers are making
plans to compete in the Region XI Tournament.
The announcement was made today that Lyon qualified for
the tournament as the region's No. 6 seed, and will
begin play on Friday at 7 p.m. in Lebanon, Ky. against
the region's No. 3 seed, the Campbellsville University
Lady Tigers of Campbellsville, Ky.
If Lyon manages to get by Campbellsville, the Pipers
will play the region's No. 2 seed, Georgetown College of
Georgetown, Ky., Saturday at 11 a.m.
Only the top six ranked teams from each region qualify
for the tournament, and Lyon was sitting at No. 9 in the
next-to-last regional rankings of the year. The Pipers
leapfrogged three teams to make the field and were
likely selected for the regional tournament due to their
2006 TranSouth Conference Tournament quarterfinalist
finish, which included a big win over TranSouth No. 3
seed Trevecca Nazarene - who at the time was ranked No.
5 in the region.
Lyon finished the regular season as the TranSouth
Conference's fifth-place team, but had two big
regular-season wins over current region No. 5 seed Union
University, including a 3-0 win at Union - which halted
an 11-match winning streak for the Lady Bulldogs.
