It was as good as soccer
gets. With two teams working at a break-neck pace through
two halves and two overtime periods.
How fitting that the game
was on Labor Day.
As hard as they worked, the Lyon College Scots
and the Campbellsville Tigers had to settle for a
hard-fought, 1-1 draw on Monday in a non-conference,
double-overtime thriller at Lyon College Soccer Field.
Unfortunately, the game
wasn't without controversy. Two questionable offside
calls against the Scots in the latter stages of contest,
including one in the 90th minute that disallowed a Scots
goal, marred the otherwise enjoyable contest.
The Scots were the first
to light the scoreboard in the first half when freshman
Tobi Osinowo lit the net with a header in the 27th
minute on an assist from fellow frosh Greg Buford.
Campbellsville didn't
answer until the 75th minute when Brent Solomon took on
the goalkeeper and scored unassisted to tie the game at
1-all.
Dustin Horton and Matt
Callaway split the game in goal for the Scots. Horton
took the first half and saved five shots while Callaway
(0-1-1) worked the second half and both overtimes for
the tie.
Lyon College's travels next to the great state of Texas for a two-day football
doubleheader -- one game with East Texas Baptist on Sept. 8, and another with
LeTourneau on Sept. 9.
