BATESVILLE, Ark. -- The Lyon College Scots rallied late,
but fell, 71-67, to the Mid-Continent Cougars in the
first round of the TranSouth Conference Tournament
Tuesday at Becknell Gym.
The
Scots (13-18), the tournament are eliminated from
postseason play. No. 9-seed Mid-Continent (11-22) plays
top seed Lambuth on Thursday.
Lyon
trailed 70-67 with less than :15 to go and had three
attempts at a 3-point shot but couldn't force overtime
with a bucket. Mid-Continent finally grabbed a rebound
with :02 remaining and sealed the game with a Sinisa
Korkut free throw.
Korkut paced all scorers with 28 points. The MCU forward
hit 9 of 13 shots from the field and drained 10 of 11
from the free-throw line.
Senior guard Jonathan Donaldson led the Scots with 23
points on 7 of 16 shooting from field-goal range and 6
of 8 from the charity stripe. The Beebe, Ark., standout
also had a team-high eight rebounds. Donaldson ends his
Lyon College career eighth on the all-time school
scoring list with 1,748 points.
Lyon
senior forward Levi Taylor added 12 points and five
rebounds. The Melbourne, Ark. product closes his Lyon
College career at 19th on the school's all-time scoring
list with 1,274 points.
The
game was also the last ever in Becknell for seniors
Charles Black, Trey Salley, Adam Hill and Matt Owens.
