LEBANON, Tenn. -- A
post-halftime surge against the Cumberland Bulldogs had
the Lyon College Scots thinking about breaking their
season-long TranSouth Conference heartbreak on Thursday
night.
Instead, a late-game roll
by the Bulldogs provided yet another ventricle-crusher
for the Scots in a 69-61 defeat -- the team's eighth
straight in league play.
Levi Taylor led the Scots
(9-11 overall, 0-8 in the TranSouth) with 20 points on 7
of 14 shooting from the field and was 4 of 5 from the
charity stripe. Guards Trey Salley and Jonathan
Donaldson had 12 and 11, respectively.
Torrez Hampton and Thomas
Douglas led the Bulldogs with 13 apiece.
Lyon trailed by six at
the half, but flashed out of the break to steal a 48-40
advantage behind the strength of a three-point play from
Quincy Maxfield, a free-throw from Donaldson and a
bucket from Taylor.
The Scots' lead lasted
until the four-minute mark when Cumberland stormed back
to swipe a 56-55 edge with about two minutes to play.
A reverse layup by
Donaldson put the Scots back in the driver's seat at
57-56, but then, the wheels fell off of the car.
Douglas answered with a
putback, keying a game-closing 13-4 run which
effectively sealed the Scots' fate.
