JACKSON, Tenn. – The Lyon
College Pipers coughed up a two-run lead in the bottom
of the ninth inning and gave up a one-run lead in the
bottom of the 11th in a 5-4 loss to the Union
University Lady Bulldogs in the first round of the
TranSouth Conference Tournament at Fesmire Field.
Lyon drops to 15-35 and
will play Thursday at 11 a.m. against the loser of
Wednesday evening’s Trevecca Nazarene/Bethel College
game. Union improves to 32-18 and will play the winner
of Wednesday evening’s Trevecca Nazarene/Bethel College
game.
Lyon designated player
Natalie Fuqua singled home Abbey Canon and April Wright
singled home Taylor Morgan to give the Pipers a 3-1
advantage in the bottom of the ninth. But the Pipers
allowed two runs in the bottom of the inning to force
extra innings.
In the extra frame, Lyon
scored once in the top of the 10th on a Kim
Overbey RBI single, plating Mikka Jaggers. Union
answered with its own run in the bottom half of the 10th
and then scored again on a Piper error in the bottom of
the 11th to earn the victory.
Lyon collected 14 hits,
but committed five errors in the game.
Fuqua finished 3 for 6
with two RBIs and teammate Angelique Armenta added three
hits. Phenix Butler, April Wright and Mikka Jaggers
picked up two hits apiece.
Pipers pitcher Tenequa
Martin (7-21) threw 10 1/3 innings in the loss. Martin
allowed four earned runs, 10 hits, walked two and struck
out three.
