Lyon College seeks to attract and retain talented and motivated students who can contribute to and benefit from a Lyon education. To this end, the College awards a range of scholarships intended to recognize and encourage excellence in academic performance, the fine arts, and athletics. Ordinarily students may accept only one scholarship from Lyon. All scholarships require that recipients maintain a specified level of academic performance; most require that students live on campus.

  • Academic Merit Awards
Academic merit awards are available to students who have demonstrated the promise of academic success at Lyon through strong performance in high school and on standardized tests. The different awards and the stipends associated with them are summarized below. The stated GPA and ACT figures are guidelines, not requirements; candidates can use them to estimate the level of merit award for which they may be eligible.

    The Application Process
To apply for an academic merit award, prospective students should complete an application for admission and submit all appropriate application materials (i.e., essay, ACT/SAT score, fee, recommendations). The admission application serves as an application for most academic merit awards. As part of the application process, students who are interested in these awards are strongly encouraged to schedule an official visit to campus through the Office of Admission. Students who complete their application for admission prior to January 15 will receive priority in the awarding of academic merit awards. Candidates should follow up with the Office of Admission to ensure that application materials are complete.

In reviewing applications for academic merit awards, the College will also consider community service, leadership experiences, and extracurricular activities as demonstrated in a candidate's application, essay, letters of recommendation and nomination, and on-campus interviews. Scholarships are renewable annually provided students maintain an appropriate level of academic performance.

    Fine Arts Scholarships
Fine Arts Scholarships can be awarded up to $7,500 each on an annual basis to applicants who demonstrate outstanding ability in theater, music, art, or Scottish Heritage. These awards may be used to supplement a Trustees', President's, Dean's, or Transfer Scholarship up to a maximum combined award of $7,500. Candidates for fine arts scholarships will be asked to schedule a campus audition or portfolio review through the Office of Admission.

    Athletic Scholarships
Lyon is an NAIA Division I school and competes in the TranSouth Conference. A limited number of athletic scholarships are available for student-athletes who are members of Lyon's intercollegiate athletic teams. Interested candidates should apply to the Department of Athletics. Student-athletes will retain an athletic scholarship by complying with NAIA Division I eligibility requirements, appropriate College regulations, and scholarship maintenance requirements. Applicants who receive a Trustees', President's, or Dean's scholarship may also be eligible for athletic awards and Lyon grants up to a maximum combined award of $7,500. Athletic scholarships are awarded by the Office of Enrollment Services in consultation with the Athletic Department.

    Other Financial Aid
All prospective students are encouraged to complete and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit it to the Federal processor no later than February 15 of their final year of high school. Students who complete and file this form will be considered for federal and state need-based financial aid programs. In addition, they will be considered for the Lyon Grant program. Lyon Grants of up to $2,000 may be awarded to students who demonstrate financial need on the basis of the analysis of their FAFSA.
