Lyon College announces new initiative, Lyon College, rated by U.S. News & World Report as a top-tier national liberal arts college and a best value among those colleges, today announced a new initiative, “The Lyon Experience,” that will, among other things, provide all new students with a laptop computer. The program enhances technological and outside-the-classroom education experiences, providing what Lyon officials call “a student-centered, experience-rich liberal arts education for the 21st century.” More First varsity softball team opens season The Lyon College Pipers softball team opened its inaugural season Feb. 18 at Batesville's North Complex. The team was led onto the field by Jimmy Bell and Kenton Adler of the Lyon College Pipe Band. Lyon President Walter Roettger threw out the first pitch for the first-ever home softball game. The North Complex is the home field until the news softball field is constructed on the Lyon campus. The Pipers are 5-9 overall and 4-2 in TranSouth Conference play. Photos
"Snow day" sees birth of the yeti Tuesday, March 4, brought a rare "snow day" to the Lyon campus, and with classes canceled due to the weather, several Lyon students found time to construct a snow "yeti." Maybe a little bit of cash, maybe a couple of credit cards, or maybe a crumpled receipt from the gift you brought your friend for his or her birthday last year. But there is something in your wallet that is very important and it will help you keep that little more cash in your wallet. It’s your identification card, more commonly known as an ID card. Yes, those little plastic cards with the horrid picture where your smile looks too big, your hair too bazaar and your head too small.
Budy is keynote speaker at Subiaco Academy Lyon College Writer-in-Residence Andrea Hollander Budy was the keynote speaker for the 2008 Literary Symposium at Subiaco Academy Feb. 21 where she received the 2008 Subiaco Award for Literary Merit. Above, Ms. Budy speaks with Taylor Johns, a Subiaco Academy freshman who won first place in the Poetry Writing Competition during the symposium. Students rehearsing spring theatre production The spring production for Harlequin Theatre has been cast and is in rehearsal, according to Dr. Michael Counts, professor of theatre, who is directing the play. “The Heidi Chronicles” is a play about the coming of age of Heidi Holland, an art historian and a member of the baby boomer generation. Performances are April 10-13. Concert band gears up for spring performance Lyon College’s newly formed concert band is already gearing for its spring concert. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. April 28 in Brown Chapel. The band will perform several pieces ranging from classical to very contemporary,” said Julinda Dixon, director. The band currently consists of 20 members. Rehearsals are from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Dixon said that the band is open to any student or faculty member who plays a musical instrument. Lyon freshman wins third place in regional Japanese speech contest Joshua Jackson, a freshman at Lyon College, won third place in the college first-year level at the South Central Japanese Speech Contest held Feb. 16 at the University of Mississippi.
