Budy is keynote speaker at Subiaco Academy, receives literary award

Lyon College Writer-in-Residence Andrea Hollander Budy was the keynote speaker for the 2008 Literary Symposium at Subiaco Academy Feb. 21 where she received the 2008 Subiaco Award for Literary Merit.

Lyon College to host tour day Saturday

Lyon College will host a tour day Saturday, March 1, for high school juniors and seniors and their parents. Registration begins at 9:45 a.m. in the lobby of the Lyon Building followed by a welcome to the attendees. The first tour begins at 10:15 a.m. with lunch in Edwards Dining Hall at 11:30 a.m. The second part of the tour day begins with registration at 1:45 p.m. followed by a welcome. The second tour begins at 2:15 p.m.

Students rehearsing spring production

The spring production for Harlequin Theatre has been cast and is in rehearsal, according to Dr. Michael Counts, professor of theatre, who is directing the play. “The Heidi Chronicles” is a play about the coming of age of Heidi Holland, an art historian and a member of the baby boomer generation. Performances are April 10-13.

The cast includes Emily Fleming (Heidi Holland), Alissa Walter (Susan Johnston), Roger Simons (Peter Patrone), Victor Wilson (Scoop Rosenbaum) and ensemble roles by Seth Madison, Joe Sanchez, Ashlea Armstrong, Kelsey Lack and Amanda Wawak. Production Stage Manager is Paul Cootes.

Lyon freshman wins third place
in regional Japanese speech contest

Joshua Jackson, a freshman at Lyon College, won third place in the college first-year level at the South Central Japanese Speech Contest held Feb. 16 at the University of Mississippi. The speech contest is open to college- and graduate-level students in five states. Photo

Mortar Board to host Hogwarts Day

Mortar Board's annual Hogwarts Day will be from 1-6 p.m. March 8 on the Lyon College campus. Hogwarts Day is based around the Harry Potter novels and movie. The event is named after the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the fictional school of magic that is the main setting of the Harry Potter series. It's a day of celebration open to children of all ages within the community and on campus. There will be games, toys and prizes.

Habitat for Humanity chapter holds groundbreaking for its first house

The Habitat for Humanity Chapter of Independence County held the groundbreaking ceremony for its first house Feb. 18. Lyon College students and the Wesley Fellowship were instrumental in obtaining a charter for the organization. Several Lyon students and faculty members were at the groundbreaking. First varsity softball team opens season

The Lyon College Pipers softball team opened its inaugural season Feb. 18 at Batesville's North Complex. The team was led onto the field by Jimmy Bell and Kenton Adler of the Lyon College Pipe Band. Lyon President Walter Roettger threw out the first pitch for the first-ever home softball game. The North Complex is the home field until the news softball field is constructed on the Lyon campus. Farewell ceremony held for oak tree

Students and staff members gather at the oak tree on the southwest end of Huser Field for a tree ceremony Feb. 20. The tree will be removed to make room for a new softball field. Participants in the ceremony provided quotes about trees, read poems to honor trees and shared memories of the large oak tree. Construction of the softball field is expected to begin soon. Photo

Blevins to talk about strange murder trial
at Mabee-Simpson Library on Feb. 27

A Stone County murder will be the topic of discussion at a library lecture this month. Dr. Brooks Blevins, Lyon College assistant professor of history, will speak at noon Feb. 27 at the Mabee-Simpson Library. Blevins’ lecture will be “The ‘Arkansas Ghost’ Trial:  The Strange Story of the Murder of Connie Franklin.”

Convocation on academic cheating
set for Feb. 28; Don McCabe to speak

An expert on academic cheating will share his research on the subject with Lyon College students this month. Dr. Don McCabe, professor of management and global business at Rutgers University, will speak about academic cheating at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in Nucor Auditorium on the Lyon College campus. The event, sponsored by the Convocations Committee, is free and open to the public.

Japan Lecture Series guest speaker
to discuss Hello Kitty phenomenon

Hello Kitty is an unlikely success story. 
Launched 30 years ago with no fanfare, the cartoon cat has almost no story or media exposure. Yet with almost no advertising, the two-dimensional cat now churns out half a billion dollars in revenue and is sold in more than 40 countries.  Ken Belson, co-author of “Hello Kitty: The Remarkable Story of Sanrio and the Billion Dollar Feline Phenomenon,” will explain how Hello Kitty grew into one of the most recognizable characters in the world in a lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at Sanders Lecture Hall in the Derby Center on the Lyon College campus.

War casualties exhibition to be displayed
at Lyon March 6-7; memorial planned

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in cooperation with students in Theta Alpha Kappa and Phi Sigma Tau, the honor societies in religion and philosophy at Lyon College, will honor fallen U.S. military personnel and Iraqi civilians with its traveling exhibition "Eyes Wide Open: The Cost of War to Arkansans." The exhibit will be on display at Edwards Commons from 6-10 p.m. March 6 and 9 a.m.-noon on March 7. A memorial service will be from 6-7 p.m. March 6.

Controversial biologist Tyrone Hayes
to speak at Lyon College March 10

Biologist Dr. Tyrone Hayes, dubbed "Frog Man" because of his research involving frogs, will be the guest speaker at a convocation at 7:30 p.m. March 10 in Sanders Lecture Hall in the Derby Center. The program is sponsored by the College's Convocations Committee. It is open to the public and admission is free.

Heasley Prize winner Lewis Nordan
to visit campus March 11 for reading

Lewis Nordan, winner of the 2008 Leila Lenore Heasley Prize, will visit Lyon College March 11 for two events. He will participate in a "Writer's Life" interview at 11 a.m. that day in Bevens Music Room. At 7:30 p.m., he will read from his work, also in Bevens. A book signing will follow. Both events are free and open to the public.
